Sedmera1,685 m
A stone hut above seven lakes, open in summer only.
Open 15 June to 30 September46 bunks, no road4½ hours on foot from Bohinj
Four and a half hours up
The Bohinj trail, the way most people walk it. Drag the row.
Seven in the morning, Bohinj
Leave the car at the Savica car park, 653 m. Fill your bottles: there is no water for three hours.

The wall
Forty zigzags up a limestone face. Cables on the steep parts; take them slowly in the wet.

Black Lake, 1,294 m
The first of the seven, dark under larches. Most people stop here for bread and cheese.

The plateau
Snow lies here into late June. Follow the red and white marks on the rocks, not the footprints.

Double Lake
Two pools joined by a gravel bar. The roof of the hut shows above them.

Half past twelve, Sedmera
Boots off at the door. Soup is on from noon, and the stamp is on the counter.
Lakes
The hut is named after them: sedmera means the seven. You pass them in this order on the way up from Bohinj, and swimming is not allowed in any of them — this is a national park.
Black Lake · 1,294 m
Lowest and warmest, in a bowl of larches. The water is dark from the forest floor; the marmots are not.
Lower Double Lake · 1,685 m
Right below the hut. In a dry August it splits from its twin and the gravel bar between them becomes the path to the door.
Upper Double Lake · 1,685 m
Shallow and clear. The hut takes its drinking water from the spring above it, not from the lake.
Kidney Lake · 1,830 m
The largest of the seven, shaped like its name. Ice can last into July.
Green Lake · 1,980 m
Coloured by algae in late summer. A good turnaround point for an evening walk from the hut: forty minutes up.
Brown Lake · 1,995 m
Small and peaty, under the scree of the Hribarice pass. The trail from Trenta comes down past it.
Upper Lake · 2,002 m
The highest, often still frozen in June. From its rim you see all the others in a line.
From the hut kitchen
Served from noon to eight. Everything is carried up twice a season or cooked here.

Before you walk up
Open 15 June to 30 September. Outside the season the winter room sleeps eight, unheated.
Telephone +386 4 000 00 00 between six and eight in the evening, when the generator runs.
Cash only. The nearest cash machine is down in Bohinj.
Can I come without booking?
Yes, and nobody is turned away after dark. In July and August the bunks fill; without a booking you may sleep on a bench in the dining room.
Is there a shower?
No. There is a cold tap in the washroom and seven lakes you may not swim in.
Can I bring my dog?
Dogs sleep in the porch, not in the rooms. In the national park they stay on a lead.
What if the weather turns?
Storms build most afternoons in July. Leave Bohinj by eight, and if you hear thunder below the wall, turn back: the cables conduct.
Do you take cards?
No: there is no line up here. Bring cash for the night and the kitchen.
